line-height: 115%;">Power is control over a group of people, an item, or an object. There is a large variety of power, and this power can be misused by everyone, even by the leaders who started out with good intentions for society. Some examples of these would be political power, and economic power.

Economic power is an excellent way to trade and boosts the entire country. It is a way of westernizing the poor countries by trade and efficiently creating highly crafted objects. It brought in the idea of capitalism, where the division of poor and rich kicked in. The bigger countries said that they where only trying to westernize the undeveloped countries but the real reason was to benefit the rich and cause the rich to become richer. Another example is for globalization. It is evident that globalization is good because it allows us to get merchandise for the cheapest and efficient way. This is why we have McDonalds in India, and other stores. But this power also harms the others around them. It increases poverty because the rich hire cheap labor and pay insufficient wages for the workers, giving the rich a bigger profit at the end of the day.

Another type of power would be political power. Many historical events happened because of power. Some examples would be Hitler, Stalin, and Lenin. They all had a good intention for society but their ideas went wrong because they had too much power. Stalin wanted to make everyone equal; as did Lenin, but whilst doing that he lost his original intention because he had too much control over people. Hitler was a lunatic, and he had no good intentions from the start of his leadership till the end of it, his intentions to begin where to unite all Germans, get more land, and to take over the world. He went mad with the amount of power he received which is mainly why his plan had failed. More examples of political power would be Marie Antoinette, a woman who abused her power to benefit herself, Louis XV a man who cared less for the people he ruled over. Even more examples are Tsar Nicholas, a man who enjoyed the rich life and never understood the poor, and finally Sadam Hussain, a man who used brutal techniques to hurt those around him.

Power is when you know your limit, and when you know what is right. To have a good control over people, and to know when to say when, and to understand that there are always consequences for what you do to whatever you are in control of. Power can be misused easily, and it is a difficult ability to posses, but once you have it, there is no stopping what you can do with it. In the end it can either make you or break you. You can be a Hitler, or you can be someone people look up to. The choice is yours.

End of Pop

Three things that i learned from population project are time management, using a stronger voice and interpreting data. In the Hunger Games, the Capitol has control over the people and what they are meant to do. For example, District 11 is in charge of agriculture and District 12 is in mining. The capitol had decided this and that gives them control over the twelve districts. Another way that control is shown in the book is on page 82 of the novel. On this page is a brief description of the Avox Girl being taken away by a hover craft because she did something the capitol was against. They took her away, made her a worker, killed her friend, and cut up her tongue. This is one other way the capitol has power of the people. one more example that control is shown throughout the Hunger Games, is when Katniss, the main character, is in the arena. She has no control over what happens such as, fires, or storms, or the rules that the Game-Makers decide upon. She only has to survive. and the Game-Makers have complete control over how they want to affect the games and meddle around as much as possible. In my novel I believe that control is the main theme and it is the capitol who has complete control over the people in Panem.

PoP feedback

Monday
On Monday, I plan to get a good start on note cards and finding more information

Tuesday
I plan on gathering some more note cards and creating my outline

Wednesday
I plan on getting my outline together.

Thursday
I plan on creating my research paper

Friday
I plan on creating my research paper

Technology

What is technology?
Technology is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life according to dictionary.com

What are the 5 most and 5 least important technologies used today?
Most important technology are life support, game boys, elevators, calculator, and phones. That’s a person who doesn’t like newfangled contraptions. Contraptions like nuclear submarines armed with Poseidon missiles that have H-bombs in their warheads, and like computers that cheat you out of becoming. Bill Gates says, “Wait till you can see what your computer can become.” But it’s you who should be doing the becoming. What you can become is the miracle you were born to work—not the damn fool computer.”

- Kurt Vonnegut

I partially agree with this statement that Kurt Vonnegut has said because it is somewhat states the truth. To some extent man should use their own work by themselves and not use some "contraption" to do what they could do with their own two hands and feet. But there are many situations in which machines are necessary such as the computer that makes your the process of writing faster. The computer can help you achieve the miracle that you were born to work because many jobs revolve around using the computer nowadays but back then the computer was sort of pointless.

Holy War

Why is the phrase “Holy War” an oxymoron?
The phrase "Holy War" is in fact an oxymoron for several different reasons. Firstly the definition of Holy is sacred or worship. The definition of war is an act of violence that can harm or hurt people. But both of the words together means, "a war that defends or acts for a certain religion." Aren't religions meant to teach peace in their teachings? Then why do they fight? If religions believe in peace and tell fellow followers to not kill, to not commence in violent activities, to stay clear from harming other people then why in heavens name would you find this war justified. No war has any justification and to say that a war was for religious reasons just insults the whole religion in my opinion. This is why the phrase "Holy War" is an oxymoron.
Why is it that so many conflicts in the world today are based upon religious differences yet all major world religions condemn killing?
I think that many people have been brainwashed by a higher power to believe that war is a necessary resource and if it is in Gods name then it is justified even though you may kill many other people. Also in many religions if you can convert someone into your religion most of your bad deeds become cleared off and you then are justified in the desperate measures such as war.

Do you think there will be a World War III in your lifetime?

To answer the question honestly, I doubt that World War Three will ever happen in my lifetime. A lot of countries have signed peace treaties and have promised to not have war with other countries and most of the countries in the world are part of the United Nations and they have vowed not to be part of war. Also another reason that there may not be war in my lifetime is because no one is actually power hungry anymore. People seem to be happy with the land that they own and are satisfied with their economy apart from poor countries. No one is like Hitler, Stalin or Mussolini and they aren't many fascist countries left in this world. The last reason that WW3 wont occur is because people understand the problems that were left due to WW1 and WW2 such as the economy being ruined and a lot of lives being taken. This is the reason why I don't believe WW3 will ever happen in my lifetime.

Anne Frank Round About

In The New York Times the writer Anna Quindlen asked, “Would our understanding of the Holocaust be quite the same if Anne Frank had not taken a small plaid diary into hiding with her?” Respond to this question and explain your answer.
If Anne Frank's diary had not been found or had Anne not have taken the diary with her while in hiding then our understanding of the Holocaust would not have been the same because we wouldn't have a first hand out account of the events. Also we wouldn't have the sense of fear, anxiety, anger and a lot more emotions that Anne placed in the comfort of her diary giving us her point of view of how the Jews were being treated. It gives the emotional and mental depth of the Holocaust and not just the list of events and the facts. It gives meaning and feeling towards the Holocaust and another side to look from. How's Marianne? Last time you wrote to me, you told me that she had a fever. Did you take her to the doctors yet? I strongly advise you should. I would hate to see another sister of mine die. I really miss everyone and finally have time today to write to you and remind you that Friedrich needs new shoes and I will send the money over shortly.

We have successfully invaded Poland in the last few weeks. I couldn't have been any more scared but I held my head high and thought about how I would make my country proud if I could just destroy the Polish. We hardly had enough food to feed most mouths but we tried our best to stay strong. We attacked from three fronts East Prussia in the North, Germany in the west and Slovakia in the south. We had planes, tanks, guns and more and the only thing that would ever cross our minds is to not leave a single polish alive who got in the way.

Us soldiers managed to conquer Poland and make sure that they never try to over take Poland ever. We didn't spare those Polish who tried to run away from us. No one can ever fear The Fürer. For starters the character Mollie was absent throughout the film. Mollie may not have seemed like an important character but in the Russian Revolution, Mollie's character represented the nobles and that is why she seemed important in the book yet she wasn't in the movie. Most of the movie was accurate except for a few events that happened too early. One example of this would be the death of Old Major. In the book Old Major dies three days after his speech and not after he sings. Also in the movie the Rebellion and the Battle of the Cowshed happened on the exact same day whereas in the book they had happened in separate days.
Other than these inaccurate changes, the rest of the movie was mostly correct i. e that Snowball was exiled after the plan of the Wind Mill had been introduced, that trade had happened, animals were slaughtered and that Napoleon was a bad leader. Overall the movie was good and was very entertaining and did a good job of reasonably portraying the book into an animated movie despite the few minor changes.

Which Character Am I Most Like?

In Animal Farm I think I am most like Mollie because she and I have many same characteristics. She also ran away when things were getting tough on her, and although its not the best way to deal with problems, i do run away aswell. This example is on page 25. Injustice was shown in chapter one where Mr Jones would neglect the animals and forget to feed then and take off to go drinking rather then look after the animals. In chapters 2 and 3 the animals showed self determination by running the farm without the need of Mr Jones or other humans. They worked constantly and needed no help with it and did their work without Mr Jones.
Feed back Cartoon

The main visual elements in this cartoon is a British man handing out treaties to everyone. Other people are also handing out treaties to other people and everyone has got a treaties except one woman who is crying on the side and one man who has not been given anything at all. The point of this political cartoon is that every country or representative of a country is making alliances but there are the odd two or three countries that don't get accepted into the alliance, which is bad because they will be easier to fight in wars. The cartoonist is showing that it is unfair because of the woman who is crying. The point they trying to get across is that not everyone can get included in an alliance and those who don't get upset about it. Maybe they should show anger on the people who do not included because then it shows how wars are created. This relates to the Great Powers Game because everyone in the game was making alliances to save themselves and those who did not make alliances with the strong countries were easiest to crush and rip them off all their power.

I was Great Britain. We had the advantage along with Russia and USA. It didnt take very long at first to build up our empire but when we were at war our empire died. At firsdt our empire was one of the greatest but then we lost everything due to war. It was most important to gain armies and industry mainly bacause you allies would join forces to destroy you and industry because you need to build up your empire and gain economic points. We did do well to start off with but then we lost everything and were one of the poorest empires there was. We would not have been so naive and we should have brought more armies and we would if we did this again. Our allies hurt us even though we helped them as much as we could even the ones who didnt go at war against us didnt help us either. The lesson I learned is don not trust anyone even your "friends". Ive learned that conflict does not help you, they hurt you, and you can never have a "good" war.

Goals for Thrid Quarter

My goals from last quarter were to improve my writing skills, build on my vocabulary and to improve my reading standards. I have improved my reading abilities by a lot but my vocab and my writing is still lacking in formality. I have a hard time using a more formal voice in my writing mainly due to my vocabulary not being up to the eighth grade standard.
For quarter three in humanities I would still wish to work on these goals but I also have some other goals that I would like to improve on. I would like for my research skills to improve, I never really thought that I would need this skill to improve but due to my research paper last quarter I decided this is one goal I wish to work on. I would also like to improve on my paraphrasing and sentence fluency also another skill I realize I should work on due to the research paper on Africa. And lastly I would like to improve on my oral communication. I want to be able to speak in front of my peers and be able to to speak with confidence and eye contact. I hope to achieve these goals by the end of the quarter

Positive effects of Imperialism

The Europeans colonized Africa

Education was introduced to some African children

Buildings were built

New technology was introduced to the African people

Governments were established

Railways were built

Shipping ports were

Negative effects of Imperialism

Tribes that did not get along were placed together

Power was snatched away from people

People were enslaved

Land was taken from people

People were stripped from their rights

Tribes were ruined

Most of the buildings they brought was for their personal gain

They used Africa's resources

They brought with them disease

Current Event 3

Who?
Nigerian Army members
What?
Soldiers have been imprisoned for life because they illegialy sold guns to oil militants
Where?
Nigeria
Why?
They sold them7,000 guns illegaly because they eeded money and the oil militants bribed the soldiers or the Nigerian Army into selling them.

This is news worthy story because it shows how the economy suffrs and the people will do whatever they can to get the money they need to survive.Today everything depends on how much money ou get and with that money people use it to keep themselves living, and this article shows that people are desperate in Nigeria and have to go agains the law to be able to fend for themselves.

In Nigeria they have many oil fields and many rich resources along with a diverse culture and people of different ethnicity. Its got a huge population mainly because of its high birthrate and that also makes it one of the poorest countries in Africa. Many of the other countries in West Africa have poverty and a big problem in economics along with unstable goverments and famines. One of the countries that has a stable democratic government is Cape Verde. Countries in West Africa struggle with poor economy and political instability ever since they have been independent. In Africa there is a lot famine and starvation due tocrops being eaten by locusts. West Africa is a very poor part of the African region.

FeedBack: Cartoon! :]

The main visual elements in this picture is that there is a large footprint standing on a lack 3-D version of Africa. Its a large continent with a wide range of cultures, religions, trade and history. The people of West Africa belong to hundreds of different ethnic groups, examples would be, Hausa and Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo and more. Colonization separated most of the ethnic groups and sometimes ethnic groups that didn't get along, get grouped together. Along with ethnic groups there are many forms of religion in West Africa, the two main religions that are practiced are Islam, brought by the North Africans, and Christianity, brought by the Europeans. Another form of practiced religion is animism, the belief that natural objects have spirits and the people who follow this type of religion honor the memories of their ancestors. In West Africa many of the families live in small huts made from straw, mud, cow dung, and mud brick. It is considered to be the woman's job to decorate the house and to take care of the house otherwise but this however is only in the rural parts of West Africa. In the urban areas of West Africa people live in regular homes, apartments etc. So in summary, West Africa has a wide and iverse culture along with a lot of rich history.

Scramble for Africa

We decided to make alliances with Great Britain saying that we wouldnt conquer them and give them some of our good land as long as they take sides with us and the both of us would conquer Africa. This was a good strategy because Great Britain was VERY powerful and we needed a strong country to help us when we needed it a lot. We needed petroluem, zinc, iron, and we also wanted diamonds for our country did not have as much as Africa had. We do not, however, know who won but I think it was either Germany or Great Britain. We also do not know who lost because someone decided to take their anger out on the board, but my best guess would be that Spain or Portugal lost.

Current Events 2

Mohammed Bello Abubakar is an 84 year old man was in police custody for 59 days and has now recieved a bail. In Nigeria it is common to marry more than one women and such marriages are still practiced, but the reason that these marriages caused such a riot is because not only did he marry 86 women, but he said that God made him do it. If you take a look at a physical map of Africa you would see that West Africa was mostly mostly made up of plains, deserts, cliffs and one river, The Niger River. The plains are usually used for to raise livestock or to plant crops for the people living in that region. People usually build their homes on the sides of cliffs and they have been building their homes their for many years now. The Niger River is used for fishing and for farming. West Africa has a wide variety of resources such as, agricultural products, oil, and minerals. The climate of West Africa is excellent for agricultural uses. Oil is found at the coast of Niger and is THE most valuable resource there is. So to summarize what I have been saying previously West Africa has plains, valuable resources and has good agricultural usage.

Journal Reflection

I think that the book To Be A Slave can be trusted because they give different sources. Its is in fact it is a very trustable book. It is not biased and gives you ALL the main ideas from different slaves throughout history. It has the slaves that were treated like dirt and were beat up, and the book also has the slaves that weren't treated so badly. He also has on pages 13-14 a note on where is information was found etc, so in order to write he HAD to research and may have had found some very reliable sources. Lack of food in Africa has occured in the past and is still occuring. Children in Niger die because their families cannot afford to pay for food and food is a necesity of life. Even though Niger is an arable land many people still die. Rescue teams have been sent but still there are people starving. The movement in this picture is the movement of culture, it is a castle from the 15 or 16 century and it is open for people to look at and learn about the idea of what happened at those times. The region in this picture is probably a windy area as the flag is being blown about and the sky is foggy. The human environmental interaction is that the castle is built on a volcano and a hill and obviously some damage had to be done for the castle to be on such land. The location of the castle is Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. Place would be the climate because the U.K is known to be a very cold area to live in.

FeedBack- "Violence only leads to more violence"

"Violence only leads to more violence" is one of the quotes that is both true and makes a lot of sense. It is very well related to the play because by killing Caesar, which was both a stupid and violent thing, the conspirators ended up dead themselves, which was a good and violent thing again. It relates to real life aswell because if somebody wanted, lets use oil as an example, if they wanted oil and their country did not have oil then that person would fight another country for oil and cause the two countries to have a war. That situation could have been resolved with an agreement of asking for oil nicley and getting oil which would have saved more lives and been better for the two countries. If the conspirators did not kill Caesar and just talked to him and let him know how they had felt then maybe Caesar would have changed for the good of Rome and more people would have live, i.e the conspirators. That is what I think of the quote.

Brutus's Dilemma

Brutus has to face a moral dilemma, should he do whats best for Rome or should he believe in what Caesar has in mind? In the end he decides or gets persuaded into thinking that Caesar is not a good leader for Rome and will only lead to chaos. But in the end it all comes down to "was this the right thing to do?"
If I was Brutus then I would not kill Caesar or give into Cassius. I would see that by letting Caesar rule I would be doing what is best for Rome. I think this is correct way to think because he is a strong, and wise person who would probably do whats best for Rome. In the first few pages of 1:1, it is about how people are very happy with Caesar and how Caesar managed to conquer Spain from Pompey. I think this shows that Caesar was probably a very strong person and certainly brave enough to attempt such dangerous tasks. This also proves that he was doing this for the good of Rome. And I think that by letting him live I,Brutus, would have been doing the correct thing.
Another reason I would have let him live is because Caesar was able to see through Cassius and know that there is probably something not trust able with him which was a true assumption.
So to summarize in my mind Caesar is the perfect leader and if I was Brutus I would not kill such a person.

Leadership

I think that the qualities of a good leader is that they should be kind, thoughtful, wise, strong, brave, and listens to the people and do what is best for them. They should have no fears and make everyone fear him yet like him at the same time. The leader should be respected and should respect everyone. They should not only be strong but also very clever and should always have an idea of consequences and have a plan ready for emergencies. I would like to say that SLAMS is our leader but it is not. In this school every student is their own leader. There is also a large bag with the words "Profits from child labor" on it. I think that the issue in this cartoon is that the boss (giant) is squeezing the money out of the working man and making his own money from it. I think that the cartoonist is showing his dislike for capitalism by making it look evil in the sense that the big people will take everything from the little people in order for the big people to get what they want. I can see the artists opinion in this because the big man is taking all of the money from the working man and he probably has done this quite a lot because he has about two sacks full of money and he looks rather wealthy. Maybe it could be less blurry and more clearer so that the viewer can actually understand what the cartoon is of.

Feedback- Revise my goals!

My feedback post on my goals from two weeks or so back consisted of getting my writing skills to improve and the second goal was to improve my vocabulary. I still want to accomplish these goals but maybe in a newer direction than before. I want to improve my writing skills but mostly in fictional pieces because I have trouble with showing vs. telling and with that my vocabulary with grow by itself. I also would like to be able to have a more deep view on things and not think inside the box as I normally do. These new goals are probably my goals for now maybe later on I will either accomplish them or have more goals but for now I'm going to try and set these ones out.

Stock Market 1870's

I thought that the tip "Don't put all of your eggs in one basket" best fit me because I didnt invest all my money on one company I went ahead and put my "eggs" or money all different types of stock and decided buy all the shares for this company thinking that it will gain me more money, I went ahead and decided to take about two shares of stock from the different companies, only fate could have told what was going to happen. Day 2 was also harder in the assembly line because we had to make and exact replica of Chubby Bear. As a colorer I found it quite easy to color but it was also hard because you had to make a good product. The type we had made where very queer looking ones and that is saying it politley. It was also our job to make the product look acttractive to children to play with. Sometimes we used the wrong shade of brown or when one person was coloring they would scribble one part and then make another part neat. Quite a lot of the time we got bears that looked like bunny rabbits and other times we got bears that had glue all over the place and couldn't color it well. But we still adapted to the problems and got good at coloring fast and neatly(ish). We were one of the important people because we needed to make the bear look complete. In Day 1 we had little responsibility and in Day 2 we had so much that it was hard to bare at some points in time. Over all I had fun and enjoyed working for minimum wage. This was a very creative activity.

Factory Game Reflection Day One

Creating the toy for "my younger sibling" quite difficult because of the fact that I had limited tools and time to make my creation for my poor sibling to play with. It was probably an okay creation but not at all a great gift as a toy. Back then toys would have been diffrent to look at and to play and were probably hand made to save money but now we can go to a shop and buy a cheap teddy bear for our siblings and buy a card and thats that done. Then people would sow dolls or stich together a dress, or do something that would take a lot of work. This was a fun experiance that really brought out my creativity, though I have none.

The messy room

The Messy Room

I walked in and flipped on the lights. She had decorated her desk with clothes and it looked like what was underneath the hill of fashion was to be kept a surprise. The bed wasn’t made and under the mattresses I could see the bottoms of her pajama peeking out as if it were trying to see a glimpse of its guest. On the floor was her homework neatly scattered around covering every inch of her carpet that she had said was blue. I opened her closet and out came an avalanche of clothes almost suffocating me to death. But obviously I survived. Once I had stumbled out of the death trap I look at her bookshelf which didn’t bare books it held her shoes, shoes that were too small for even a 7year old to wear. I tripped over her math textbook and in front of me was a pizza box with ants that decided to move in. I decided to move out after that sight.

Mother Necessity

I think that “necessity is the mother of invention” means that when you need something very badly and it’s too complex to do by hand you create something to make it much easier. One example is how Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone because in those days when you wanted to tell somebody something very badly you would have to walk over to their house or ride a horse over there, but when the telephone was invented people could just telephone the person and it was quicker and less time consuming. Another example is how Henry Ford created the first automobile because if you didn’t have a car you would have to bike or ride a horse over to the market or park etc but with the car you get to the market faster and you wouldn’t have to put much effort into it. The third example I have is of Thomas Edison who invented the light bulb. Now imagine trying to work without a lamp and all you had was a candle that didn’t give much light, with the light bulb you’d be able to see and not cause a fire by knocking it over. These three examples are what I think are good examples of “Necessity is the mother of invention.”

Image from: http://www.flickr.com/photos/minxlabs/2297989507/

How I learn best

The way I learn best is by participation in things, by doing it rather than seeing it. I also work better when the class is always doing something new and not stretch lessons out for weeks or days. Its easier to do things when you're doing something rather than listen because I tune off then. During lectures I don't listen so I won't learn that way. When I do something its much easier to understand because I'm doing it so I would know how.

Feedback

The two main highlights of my first week back at school were getting to meet my class mates and friends, and getting back to work after a boring vacation. When I first got to humanities 8 I was like "YAY, I got Mr. Coyle!" and then I realised that with the fun of being an eighth grader came a lot of hard work......especially on the first day back. This year for humanities my two main goals are to improve more on my writing skills espesially on essays which I usually don't do so well on. The second thing that I want to work on is to improve on my vocabulary skills because I usually do not look up words that I do not understand. Hopefully this year I will accomplish my goals.

My Gang

My gang consists of four people. These three people are Lilli, Nikaya, and me, Sami. Lilli is in my gang because she is a real kind person. She is always there to listen to my problems and really cares about me as I do for her. She never gets on my last nerve and doesn't mind me being a maniac because she is too. We are both alike and have been inseparable since 6th grade. Nikaya is in my gang because we are most definitely alike. We both have the same tastes and are very loud. We are very hyper and care about each other. All three of us love each other a lot and we are practically like sisters. Our gang is most probably the most coolest gang in the world.
